Children with incarcerated parents experience many challenges including experiencing the stigma and shame of their parent’s actions. Often placed in foster care while the parents are in prison children suffer grief and loss, confusion around their own place of belonging and mixed messages about values, law enforcement and societal expectations. In the middle of this confusion children are often required to visit parents in prison. This type of parent/child visitation brings additional issues for the children, the Resource (Foster) parents and the biological parents. This class explores the research impacting prison visits, ways to prepare children and support options for both children and adult.
